Coaching as a Manager

Coaching is a process of inspiring and motivating others to better performance over time through positive support of the individual, recognition of their capabilities, looking forward, and assistance in setting goals and creating action plans, providing feedback on progress and material and suggestions on which to base further plans.

In this module, the reader learns how to recognise the need for coaching and differentiate this from other personal development interventions such as

  • Counselling
  • Mentoring
  • Tutoring
  • Training and
  • Consulting.

Coaches understand the difference between providing information and giving advice.  They provide new information and give feedback in the appropriate time and manner, and they understand the value of the individual generating their own questions and answers.

Through the use of diagnostics and self paced learning techniques, the reader will ascertain how to set goals for individuals that form the basis for performance evaluation and coaching if required.

The reader will also learn how to

  • Plan and run an effective coaching session for an employee.
  • Use techniques to encourage employees to adopt coaching as a basis to improve their performance.

By learning how to be more objective, a manager or coach can look at their coachee and determine what it is they are interested in, in order to encourage that individual to strive for better performance.
